I found a nice little tool in the Python Cookbook section of the Activestate website. It is pretty quick and helps to eliminate duplicate files by traversing the folder you run it on, comparing size and hashes for all the files and finally deleting them.

Comment of the author:

It ran against a 3.5 gigabyte set of files composed of about 120,000 files, of which there were about 50,000 duplicates, most of which were over 1 megabyte. The total run took about 2 minutes on a 1.33ghz G4 powerbook. Fast enough for me and fast enough without actually optimizing anything beyond the obvious.

Link to Python Recipe

Comments from my side:

- you will need python installed to use it, but you should have it anyway ;)
- as far as I can see, it works on every platform supporting python
- it doesn't replace the brain ;), it will simply delete everything duplicate
- The ASPN website is pretty slow and frequently unreachable. Contact me, if you like to have this script and can't get it from the page.

This has definitely been the last time, that I go to bed late, when I am on call. Being called, after having slept only two hours is not really nice. Of course this can happen as well, when you go to bed at nine, but I do like being called at 11 much more than being called 4 am next morning .
Sometimes, I ask myself, why we do have a hotline, when they give cases to us, without retrieving any information about them in the first place:

telephone number of the on site engineer xxxxxxx
what is the issue?: ask engineer....
what is the system type ?: ask engineer....
Severity : 1 (high) !!!

by the way
could you please work on it immediately, continuing overnight ? , grrrrrr ....
The chances are getting better, that I can visit Hong Kong once more for business. Since I was there already for a long time, I really miss it already. I have met a couple of nice colleagues there, which I would like to see again.

But I won't be too happy before everything is organized, so I prevent unneccessary disappointment.

I have recently agreed to do the early shift for our support team. Today is the second day of this week and I have to say, I like it somehow. There are quite a few advantages:

- I can get to work much faster.
- I can practically freely choose the parking lot.
- There are roughly two hours before any trouble starts.
- I do get things done in those early times, because nobody is disturbing.
- I still get some coffee from the morning delivery.
- I seem to be in a better mood every morning.
- I can leave earlier , yeah !! :)

The whole thing has a big disadvantage and I don't know, if this outweighs all the advantages. I have to get up REALLY early and I am not this kind of guy. It is not a nice drawback, but I am certainly able to adopt to it. :)
